Is asthma a problem?

Although asthma is often considered a childhood illness, many adults unknowingly develop asthma. Asthma can interfere with quality of life for adults in many ways:

A cough that "won't go away" (6 weeks or more.)
Episodes of difficult breathing while at rest.
Shortness of breath at rest or after exercise.
Fits of coughing, chest tightness, wheezing or fatigue on exposure to pets or when the smog is "bad."
Awakening from sleep due to coughing or shortness of breath (not related to heart ailments.)
Periodic episodes of severe breathing difficulty that require visits to a hospital emergency room.
Needing larger doses of asthma medication to control symptoms.
Side effects from medications prescribed in the past for asthma.
