How does Asthma Center work?

You may call the Asthma and Cough Center yourself or be referred by your personal physician. The Asthma Center's clinical nurse specialist will contact your physician to collect and discuss existing medical information. You will be asked about the history of your symptoms, medications and emergency episodes through a detailed asthma questionnaire (either during your first visit or beforehand, if time allows.)

Once at the center, you will be given a complete physical examination by one of our physician specialists. Highly specialized diagnostic procedures may be performed to determine what causes or aggravates your symptoms.

The Asthma Center team will work with you and your personal physician to formulate an asthma management plan best for you. The goal is to give you specialized tools (e.g., a peak flow meter to measure your breathing capability) and information that will let you monitor and stabilize your asthma before it interferes with your life or becomes an emergency situation.

After you complete the treatment program, the Asthma Center team provides a written summary for you and/or your physician, including a plan for adjustment of medications over the subsequent 6 to 12 months. You will feel better and have the knowledge to stay that way.
