Critical
Care Service
The Critical Care Service, which
provides continuing care for critically ill patients
in the MICU at UCLA Medical Center, is available
to see patients in consultation elsewhere in the
medical Center and accepts patients in transfer
from other hospitals. The service offers new pharmacological
and ventilator therapies as well as advanced computerized
monitoring for critically ill patients, however
unstable, with multiple organ system failure, sepsis,
or acute respiratory failure. Other services include
the whole range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
associated with the practice of critical care medicine:
flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy with ancillary
procedures, thoracentesis and closed pleural biopsy,
endotracheal intubation, arterial and central vein
catheter placement, bedside pulmonary catheterization,
chest tube placement, and chemical pleurodesis.
