Pulmonary Function Testing

Special Studies

There are other studies that may be ordered depending on your special needs. Some examples of these tests include methacholine challenge tests (testing for asthma), allergen bronchial challenge tests (testing for specific allergies), airway resistance (looking for obstruction in the large airways), and lung compliance (measuring the elasticity of the lungs, which is reduced in emphysema).

Methacholine tests are done to determine the presence of asthma. You will be monitored closely and given medication to reverse any symptoms that may occur. You will need to avoid taking anything by mouth (food or liquids) for four hours before the lung compliance study.
