POSTDOCTORAL
FELLOWSHIPS
Research and Clinical Training
Stipends and Benefits
Salaries are determined by availability of funds
and the number of fellows. As an indication, the
stipend for the first year fellows was $44,000 for
2003-2004. Financing is provided by the UCLA Medical
Center. Other agencies may provide support to individuals
for specific training or research programs. Some
fellows may be asked to apply to outside sources
for support. The Division supplements stipends when
possible. Most outstanding sources limit support
to American citizens or to those who have an immigrant
or permanent visa at the time their fellowship training
begins.
Fringe
benefits may change from year to year. At present,
they are similar to those provided to the UCLA housestaff,
including health insurance and meal tickets. No
retirement or social security deductions are required
for fellows.
The
Division encourages fellows to attend regional or
national clinical and research meetings and postgraduate
courses such as those sponsored by the American
Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest
Physicians and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
Every effort is made to provide funds for attendance
at one or two meetings or courses each year during
the second and third years of the fellowship.
The
Fellows Room includes mail boxes and individual
file cabinets, a computer connected to the Department
network and Medical Center Information Systems.
A wide range of software is available on the Department
network including word processing, spreadsheets,
database programs and statistical packages. The
network provides free on-line literature searching
capabilities.
