POSTDOCTORAL
FELLOWSHIPS
Research and Clinical Training
The Training Program
The Division's major objective is training academic
pulmonary and critical care physicians. Two tracks
are available: basic or clinical research. Either
track may involve some participation in the other
type of training. The exact sequence and content
of the clinical and research years are arranged
according to the trainee's career goals, service
needs and available research opportunities. At least
two years devoted to research are recommended for
fellows interested in an academic career, with rare
exceptions.
Most
applications are for both research and clinical
training. Applicants with doctoral degrees may apply
for research training only.
A
minimum of three years training in internal medicine
is usually necessary if the applicant intends to
become Board eligible in pulmonary diseases and
critical care medicine. Other training may be substituted
by special arrangement.
Applicants
planning clinical training must have a permanent
California medical license before starting the program.
Graduates of accredited foreign medical schools
must have appropriate credentials and examination
results before their training begins.
