Sarafian:
Ongoing studies in collaboration with Dr. Hungyi
Shau have focused on the expression and function
of peroxiredoxin, a novel antioxidant gene in the
nervous system. Several subtypes of this gene are
differentially expressed in cell types within the
brain and other tissues and the respective functions
of these gene subtypes are currently under investigation.
Collaborative
studies with Nilam Mody and Dr. Linda Demer examine
oxidative effects of low and high density lipoproteins
on selected cells of the arterial circulatory system.
Collaborative
studies with Dr. Jean de Vellis and Dr. Joel Dopp
examine the role of tumor necrosis factor in oxidative
stress associated with glial pathology in multiple
schlerosis.
Collaborative
studies with Veronic Villa and Drs. Jake Lusis and
Tom Drake explore calcium dysregulation, oxidative
stress, and cytopatholgy in knock-out and transgenic
mice manifesting cardiovascular disorders relevant
to human heart disease.
